A camshaft uses lobes (cams) to control the process of opening and closing those valves. What happens is, when the camshaft rotates, the lobes push against the valves to open them, which happens simultaneously with the crankshaft gear.
Camshafts are located in the cylinder head, and they can significantly control the speed of your vehicle if you know how to modify them. They can impact engine performance and allow it to peak at higher speeds, and this is why there is a huge difference between your average camshaft and a performance one.

Types of Camshaft Repair Kit

Single overhead camshaft (SOHC)
The single overhead camshaft engine has one camshaft per head (bank of cylinders). That’s the oldest design of overhead camshaft engines. The majority of SOHC engines will have two valves for each cylinder.

Double overhead camshaft (DOHC)
DOHC engines have two camshafts per bank. Engines that have over four valves per cylinder typically use double overhead camshafts. Using a double instead of a single overhead shaft will allow greater engine power. The logic behind this is simple – with DOHC, you can use more intake and exhaust valves, which means there will be larger openings for gas flow.
Material of Camshaft Repair Kit
Chilled iron casting
This material is exceedingly scuff-resistant and is the only material for producing quantity OHC performance camshafts. A chilled iron camshaft may be more expensive, but its resistance to wear in all conditions, far exceeds any other type of cast iron.
Steel
In general, steel is a good camshaft material. However, the type of steel has to be matched with the cam follower it runs against, as different grades of steel have different scuff characteristics.

Application of Camshaft Repair Kit
Automobile Engines
Camshafts are extensively used in automobile engines to control the timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves. They play a crucial role in regulating the air-fuel mixture intake and the expulsion of exhaust gases, optimising engine performance, power, and fuel efficiency.
Motorcycle Engines
These are fundamental components in motorcycle engines, serving the same purpose as in automobile engines. They control the timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves to improve engine efficiency and performance.
Heavy-Duty Engines
Camshafts are also employed in heavy-duty engines used in trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other industrial applications. These engines rely on precise valve timing and lift to handle high loads and deliver optimal power output.
Marine Engines
Camshafts are used in marine engines to regulate valve timing and lift, ensuring efficient fuel combustion and power delivery in boats and other watercraft.
Aircraft Engines
Camshafts are found in certain aircraft engines to control valve actuation and optimise engine performance during flight.
Diesel Engines
Camshafts are crucial components in diesel engines, controlling the timing and lift of the intake and exhaust valves. They help regulate fuel injection and exhaust gas recirculation, optimising fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
Process of Camshaft Repair Kit
A camshaft manufacturing process wherein a camshaft is cast from a heat-treatable gray cast iron having a high carbide microstructure, is annealed while retaining the carbides and then cooled to room temperature. Surfaces, such as cam lobe surfaces, are then surface hardened and the camshaft may thereafter be machined. The heat treating process comprises heating the camshaft at 1600°F (871°C) in about twenty minutes, holding the camshaft at 1600°F (871°C) for about twenty minutes and thereafter heattreating the camshafts at a temperature of 1600° to 1640°F (871 to 893°C) for about eighty minutes. The camshafts are then cooled rapidly to about 400°F (204°C), for example, within about an hour and a half, and thereafter air cooled.
- Cam: This is the most important part of a camshaft. It is responsible for the closing and opening of the valves.
- Cam follower: the part of the camshaft that has been driven.
- Driveshaft: This feature enables movement of the whole camshaft’s structure, and we see it linked with a belt to another engine’s part called the crankshaft or works autonomously.
- Shaft: This is the supporting component of the camshaft, and it binds the other parts together. It can endure stressful workloads while the combustion engine is running.
- Bearings: This part makes sure that the shaft is in its upright position. It is also an important component because it helps reduce friction when the camshaft is in operation. Additionally, it has a special tool for replacing the oil in the camshaft.
- Lobes: This structure provides the camshaft with the opportunity to exchange fuel-filled gases. Also, the lobes’ speed is relative to the engine’s speed.
- Chain sprocket: has a connection to the camshaft at one end. In addition, the chain sprocket along with the timing belt help keep the timing between the camshaft and crankshaft in sync.
