How New Friction Materials Improve Heavy Truck Braking Performance And Durability

New friction materials

Heavy trucks often need to carry a large amount of cargo on highways and complex road conditions, and the reliability of their braking systems is related to road safety and transportation efficiency. In the past, traditional friction materials often suffered from rapid wear and severe thermal decay when dealing with these high-load braking, affecting driving safety. With the advancement of technology, the application of new friction materials has brought new breakthroughs in improving the braking performance and durability of heavy trucks.

Application of brake pads on heavy trucks

1. New carbon-ceramic composite friction materials

This type of material has ultra-high thermal conductivity and strength by making a special structure of carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix.

When a heavy truck is fully loaded, the friction force generated instantly during braking can reach several tons, and the high temperature generated during braking can quickly cause the surface temperature of the friction material to exceed 600℃. Under such extreme working conditions, traditional semi-metallic friction materials are prone to problems such as decreased friction coefficient and material peeling, resulting in a significant reduction in braking efficiency. The new carbon-ceramic composite friction material is made of high-strength carbon fiber as a reinforcement, combined with a high-temperature resistant ceramic matrix, through a special composite process. The thermal conductivity of this material is more than 5 times that of traditional materials. It can quickly conduct the heat generated by braking, ensure that the surface temperature of the material is stable within 800℃, control the fluctuation of the friction coefficient within a very small range, and ensure that the braking force does not decay during emergency braking.

According to measured data, heavy trucks equipped with new carbon ceramic friction materials have a braking distance that is about 15% shorter than that of traditional materials after 10 consecutive high-intensity braking.

2. New metal-based composite friction material

It is made of copper alloy as the matrix, with hard particles such as silicon carbide and aluminum oxide added, and is made through powder metallurgy. This material has excellent wear resistance and can withstand the huge friction caused by the large mass of heavy trucks.

Actual application data shows that the wear rate of metal-based composite friction materials is only 40% of that of traditional materials, and the service life can reach more than 2 times that of traditional materials.

In addition, the special lubricating ingredients added to the material give it self-lubricating properties, which not only reduces the friction resistance between the brake disc and reduces energy consumption, but also effectively extends the service life of the brake disc and greatly reduces the maintenance cost of the vehicle.

3. Intelligent monitoring technology

By embedding micro sensors inside the material, key data such as the temperature and wear of the friction plate can be monitored in real time, and the information can be transmitted to the vehicle system synchronously.

When the temperature is too high or the wear reaches a critical value, the system will immediately issue an alarm to remind the driver to take measures to avoid risks in advance and improve the safety of vehicle driving.

With the development of the logistics industry, the requirements for the safety and economy of heavy trucks are constantly increasing. With its excellent performance, the new friction material has become the first choice for upgrading the braking system of heavy trucks, providing solid guarantee for road transportation safety and cost reduction and efficiency improvement in the industry.
